The master’s thesis How We Speak Poetry explores the actor’s preparation for the
interpretation of poetry. The thesis provides an overview of creative approaches that can assist
the interpreter during the preparatory process in establishing a deeper connection with the
given text and in achieving a more comprehensive preparation for the final spoken
interpretation. The theoretical framework is supported by practical examples based on
selected poetry by three twentieth-century Latin American poets: Pablo Neruda, Octavio Paz,
and Jorge Luis Borges. The research is grounded in practical experience and offers insight
into one of the possible approaches to preparing a spoken interpretation of poetry, based on
the premise that working with poetry can be understood as an inspiring and creative process.
