Even today, folklore texts do not enjoy legal protection, so it is much more difficult for storytellers as primary authors and text recorders/collectors, who are rightly considered to be secondary authors, to claim copyright.
There is, therefore, a danger that folklore texts will be appropriated by individuals who are neither recorders nor collectors in the field, but merely editors of already published collected folklore material or individual author’s texts, all the more so if they make editorial alterations, often under the pretext of making improvements or adapting them for young or undemanding readers.
