This thesis examines the potential for incorporating Idrija lace into contemporary graphic design. The research aimed to determine whether handmade lace can serve as a foundation for creating original graphic designs. Lace was considered not only as a decorative motif but also as a structural element of visual composition.
The theoretical section outlines the basic characteristics of lace, its development, and the significance of Idrija lace. It also includes a chapter on the poster as a medium of visual communication. In the initial experimental phase, past graphic designs for the Idrija Lace Festival were analysed. For the creative process, lace was created based on a sketch, which, through digitisation and graphic processing, became the fundamental element for designing the visual system. The graphic designs were produced in Adobe Illustrator and Canva.
The final result is a visual system comprising the main poster, digital promotional graphics, and mock-ups of accompanying products. The poster features red lace, the calligraphic inscription “Thread in Motion,” and additional thin lines, complemented by supporting informational graphic elements.
It was found that the visual characteristics of Idrija lace are suitable for adaptation into contemporary graphic design. Both hypotheses were confirmed, as the lace proved to be a recognisable and adaptable motif that maintains a connection to tradition while allowing for a contemporary, creative interpretation.
