Introduction: Due to the increasing cultural diversity of the population, cultural competence is becoming an important element of modern healthcare. During the perinatal period, migrant women often face linguistic, communicative, cultural, and organizational barriers that can affect the quality and accessibility of perinatal care. Culturally competent perinatal care is an important approach to ensuring inclusive, safe, and person-centered care and to reducing health inequities. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis was to explore the characteristics of culturally competent perinatal care for migrant women and to identify the key elements, factors, and challenges that influence the quality of their care. Methods: We conducted a literature review. The literature search was performed in the MEDLINE bibliographic database. We included scientific articles in English published between 2015 and 2025 in the review. Following the selection process and taking into account the inclusion and exclusion criteria, we included seven articles in the final analysis. We analyzed the data using thematic analysis and, based on this, identified content themes related to culturally competent perinatal care for migrant women. Results: An analysis of the seven included articles showed that culturally competent perinatal care for migrant women is characterized by effective and linguistically adapted communication, the establishment of a respectful and emotionally safe relationship, and an individualized and culturally responsive approach. Other important elements of care include actively involving women in decisions regarding their own healthcare, developing the cultural competence of healthcare professionals, and ensuring appropriate organizational and systemic conditions for high-quality perinatal care. Discussion and Conclusion: The findings indicate that culturally competent perinatal care for migrant women cannot be understood merely as knowledge of the cultural characteristics of specific groups or as a set of individual characteristics of healthcare providers. Culturally competent care represents a holistic approach that includes effective communication, individualized care, active involvement of women in decision-making, and appropriate organizational and systemic conditions. The results highlight the importance of addressing communication and other barriers that may limit migrant women’s access to health services and their participation in healthcare. The development of culturally competent approaches can contribute to reducing these barriers and ensuring more inclusive, accessible, and high-quality perinatal care for migrant women.
