This master’s thesis examines French and Slovene terminology in the field of fashion across different historical periods. The terminological analysis is based on a manually compiled French-Slovene glossary of fashion-related terms, primarily from the 18th to the 20th century, a period marked by strong French influence on European fashion. The glossary was compiled using specialized literature, dictionaries, magazines, and other publications in French, Slovene, and English. The thesis primarily focuses on fashion-related loanwords: terms borrowed into Slovene either directly from French or indirectly through other languages, most often German. It also questions whether the original French terms and their borrowed Slovene equivalents, initially assumed to be synonymous, express the same meaning, and analyzes how they coexist in Slovene language usage. By combining approaches from terminology studies and translation analysis, this master’s thesis explores the challenges of translating terminology from specialized fields, such as fashion.
