Introduction: Sensory processing is a neurological process through which the brain receives, organizes, and interprets information from the environment and from the body. Differences in sensory processing may influence an individual’s daily functioning, behaviour, and participation in occupations. Atypical sensory processing is also common among individuals with mental health disorders. Purpose: The aim was to review scientific literature on sensory processing in individuals with mental health disorders and to examine how differences in sensory processing influence their participation in everyday occupations. Methods: A literature review was conducted. Literature was searched in the PubMed, Web of Science, and CINAHL databases using keywords related to sensory processing, mental health, and occupations. Articles that met the predefined inclusion criteria were included in the analysis. Results: The analysis of the included articles showed that individuals with mental health disorders often exhibit altered sensory processing patterns. The most common patterns include sensory sensitivity, sensation avoidance, and low registration. These characteristics may influence the performance of daily activities, social participation, and general quality of life. Discussion and conclusion: Differences in sensory processing may significantly influence occupational participation and functioning in individuals with mental health disorders. Therefore, understanding sensory processing patterns is important for planning appropriate occupational therapy interventions. Occupational therapists can support individuals in more effective engagement in everyday occupations through environmental adaptations and the use of sensory-based approaches.
