The universe is an infinite source of questions and scientific discoveries, as well as a source of inspiration for many people, which is why it is important to present it in a clear and engaging way. In recent years, game-based learning has become increasingly prominent, as gamification enhances students’ motivation, attention, and involvement in the learning process, while also enabling more active acquisition and reinforcement of knowledge than traditional learning methods.
The aim of the master’s thesis was to create the conceptual and visual design of an educational mobile game about space, Secrets of the Universe, which presents space-related content to the user in a fun, engaging, and educational way.
In the theoretical part, we described video games, their history, their educational and cultural significance, the game development process, user interface and user experience, and design in video games.
The experimental part presents the entire process of planning and designing the game. It includes competitor analysis, persona creation, the game design process, information architecture, wireframes, user interface and illustration design, and the development of an interactive prototype. In the game, we created an educational module as well as a set of interactive games, including quizzes, coloring pages, puzzles, and a memory game. We also designed promotional material, a website concept, and a style guide. The screens were evaluated using heatmaps.
The result of the master’s thesis is a prototype of an educational video game about space that combines elements of gamification, illustration, and user experience design, and provides a foundation for further development and testing on a broader sample of users.
