The dataset contains material from interviews with the creators of selected theatre productions, responses from a survey conducted among subscribers of the Ivančna Gorica theatre subscription series, and excerpts from the staged dramatic texts. The underlying research examines the use of non-standard language varieties in contemporary theatre productions and their reception by the audience. It focuses on four performances (Trio, Pegule, Kje je Shakespeare? / Where Is Shakespeare?, Popolni tujci / Perfect Strangers) staged as part of the Ivančna Gorica theatre subscription series, combining an analysis of production-level language choices with an empirical study of audience perception, response, and evaluation of stage speech.
The dataset consists of three main components:
1 Interviews with Theatre Creators
To gain insight into the production background, questions regarding the language varieties used, the reasons for their choice, and audience responses were sent to the creators of the selected theatre productions in February 2025. Responses were collected between February 2025 and January 2026. Data concerning the productions Trio and Kje je Shakespeare? were obtained through telephone interviews with directors Sergej Dolenc and Jakob Ivanec. For Pegule, responses were provided by the author and actor Iztok Mlakar, while for Popolni tujci, they were supplied by Saša Strnad, the public relations representative of the Šentjakobsko Theatre Ljubljana. The file contains selected excerpts from email correspondence and transcribed telephone interviews, standardised into written form with a focus on content and readability, omitting hesitation markers and discourse particles.
2 Survey of Subscribers
The second part of the research involved an online survey conducted using the 1KA platform, completed between 16 January and 3 February 2025 by 48 subscribers of the 2024 Ivančna Gorica theatre subscription series. The questionnaire comprised three thematic sections: (1) The language varieties used and their impact on the audience experience of the performances; (2) General attitudes towards non-standard varieties in theatre and the media; (3) Demographic information. Questions regarding the organisational aspects of the subscription series were also included, but this section is not part of the analysed dataset. The file contains all responses relevant to the research questions.
3 Excerpts from Dramatic Texts
The dramatic texts were provided by the creators with whom the interviews were conducted—either as full texts (Trio, Pegule) or as partial excerpts (Kje je Shakespeare?, Popolni tujci). In order to illustrate the speech of different dramatic characters, short passages are included in the file. Consent for the publication of the selected excerpts was granted by the respective copyright holders: for the production Trio, the legal heirs of the author Gašper Tič (Nataša Tič Ralijan, also on behalf of their sons); for Pegule, the author Iztok Mlakar; for Kje je Shakespeare?, the author Serina Descu (pseudonym); and for the production Popolni tujci, the author of the adaptation, Jasmin Kovic. The published excerpts are protected by copyright law.
