There's a common belief among society, that artists have a certain gifted talent, a genetic potential, which allows them to express themselves artistically. This leads to parents and teachers, to encourage kids who show signs of being artistically gifted. Often they tend to give up on children, who come across as artistically weaker, too soon, as they believe they lack talent anyway and would rather encourage those that, according to them, do have it. These differnces in treatment only start to pile up later on.
The purpouse of this diploma thesis is to find out the main factors that influence childrens' drawing development, as well as try to debunk the myth of artistic abilities being purely talent one is born with. In this thesis we will mostly focus on the field of drawing. It consists of a theoretical and practical part. The former describes phases in a child's drawing development and are deemed universal for most children as well as a quick retrospective through the already done researches on this topic, which consist on comparing children from all sorts of different groups, such as culture and various mental disorders. After that comes the empirical part, there we have interviews done with art pedagogues, who were given questions on this topic. They were asked questions such as: what they think influences a child's drawing development and if they noticed any common denominators between artistically gifted and »weaker« children and how much they think those influence their drawings.
The goal of this thesis is to better understand the general development of a child's drawing and what factors can influence whether the kid is gifted or weaker as well as how to encourage them.
