Divorce between parents may constitute one of the most traumatic experiences in a child’s life, frequently resulting in long-term psychological and emotional repercussions that extend into adulthood. Accordingly, it is of paramount importance that the principle of the best interests of the child, as a fundamental legal standard enshrined in the Slovenian Family Code, be duly reflected and given effect in all legal proceedings concerning the dissolution of marriage involving parties with joint parental responsibility. The aim of this master's thesis is to acquaint the reader with the principle of the best interests of the child and to illustrate its application in divorce procedures in the Slovenian legal system through an analysis of relevant judicial practise.
