The thesis Word Formation on the General Matura examines word-formation tasks included in the Slovenian language exam papers of the spring session of the General Matura between 2012 and 2022. The aim of the thesis was to analyze the frequency, characteristics, and difficulty of these tasks, to indentify deficiencies and inaccuracies, and to contextualize tasks in the broader context of the General Secondary School Curriculum and textbooks for Slovenian language used in upper secondary education. Among the key findings are a noticeable increase in the proportion of word-formation content and a shift in their structure on the General Matura after 2019. The thesis also presents changes in the composition of the General Matura examination board, which may have contributed to the observed modifications. Word formation, as a linguistic domain, reflects the dynamic, evolving nature and vitality of language, and understanding its principles enables students to expand their vocabulary and linguistic competence. It is therefore essential that greater pedagogical attention is devoted to this linguistic domain in Slovenian language instruction and that assessment tasks are designed to reliably test word formation knowledge through clearly defined and unambiguous questions, thereby ensuring fairness and objectivity in grading. Notably, the curriculum addresses word formation exclusively in the second year of upper secondary school.
