This thesis focuses on analyzing the psychological aspects that are crucial for the success of sailors in offshore regattas. These races are among the most demanding sailing competitions, as they involve prolonged voyages and unpredictable weather conditions, presenting numerous physical and psychological challenges.
The purpose of this thesis is to explore techniques and approaches for managing stress, mental preparedness, coping with loneliness and isolation, sleep deprivation, decision-making under pressure, maintaining concentration and motivation, setting goals, and problem-solving. We will examine thought processes and self-perception and become familiar with mental preparation techniques such as breathing exercises, relaxation techniques, autogenic training, visualization techniques, and meditation. Additionally, a concrete case study will be presented, focusing on the preparation and challenges faced by sailor Michel Desjoyeaux during the Vendée Globe 2000-2001 race.
