The master’s thesis consists of two parts, theoretical and empirical. The first part provides an overview of different descriptions of multi-word verbs in English linguistics as well as multi-word and prefixed verbs in Slovene linguistics. It also details the variety of terms used in both languages to refer to the verbs in question. The second part is an analysis of multi-word verbs formed by ten verb elements which have been chosen for the thesis and the prepositional or adverbial particles. The approach adopted for the empirical part is the contrastive one based on two dictionaries – Collins COBUILD Dictionary of Phrasal Verbs and Veliki angleško-slovenski slovar Oxford – used to extract the English multi-word verbs and their Slovene equivalents. The latter are divided into several types that can be deduced from the compiled corpus. The final part of the thesis is a summary of the findings arrived at during the analysis, focusing on the semantic, syntactic and translation challenges as well as the challenges of stylistic markedness faced when translating English multi-word verbs into Slovene.
