The Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (PMR) is an internationally unrecognised state whose territory formally belongs to the Republic of Moldova. Parastate is located on the eastern bank of the Dniester River, which almost entirely separates it from Moldovan territory. Pridnestrovian Republic borders on Ukraine. The Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic declared independence on 2 September 1990 and separated itself from Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic. War ensued, which was halted in July 1992 by the intervention of the Russian Federation. The frozen conflict in Pridnestrovian Republic has meant maintaining of the status quo. During more than thirty years of frozen conflict, the Pridnestrovian Republic has successfully built and consolidated a de facto statehood. Pridnestrovian Republic's functioning is specific due to its international isolation. The functioning and financing of state structures is subject to many compromises. Parastate depends on the financial assistance provided by the Russian Federation. The Pridnestrovian Republic also secures additional resources by tolerating illegal economic activities. Since 2014, the Parastate has been confronted with geopolitical changes in the region, mainly caused by Russia's intervention in Ukraine. Russian aggression against Ukraine in February 2022 further isolated the parastate. The authorities of the Pridnestrovian Republic are therefore forced to political pragmatism.
