The master's thesis The translation of cultural realia (in the case of A Guide to the Serbian Mentality) contains sixteen translated texts from Serbian to Slovene, which genre-wise belong to the short story-essay hybrid. We put a particular attention towards the cultural realia or, in other words, the culturally specific lexis. We are discussing the cultural realia, when the vocabularies of the source language and the target language do not overlap. That is why we need to apply a special treatment to these texts, which keeps the normative, stylistic and functional elements of the original in the translation. In the case of translating texts from A Guide to the Serbian Mentality by Momo Kapor we were interested in the categories of cultural realia present in the work and the translation strategies needed to transmit them suitably into the target-language.
