The paper addresses the role of ideology, as a recognizable historically and politically determined complex of ideas and beliefs, in Slovene translations of some works of Italian literature. Attention is focused on Niccolò Machiavelli's The Prince, Edmondo De Amicis' Heart and Giovannino Guareschi's Don Camillo; these texts, which are intended for different target audiences, were translated into Slovene during the politically turbulent period between the end of the nineteenth century and the 1960s.
