Geometry is a mathematical science developed by humans to better understand space, shapes and the world around them. In course of dealing with geometry through the teaching process we are continuously faced with various geometric terms representing an important part in learning and teaching geometry. Their understanding is of crucial importance in acquiring geometric knowledge and certain of its related procedures and strategies at doing geometric exercises.
The theoretical part of this master’s degree thesis presents geometric terms students are acquainted with from the fifth grade of primary school as well as learning and teaching theories, among which teaching and learning theory of geometric terms by van Hiele is particularly pointed out.
The empiric part of the master’s degree thesis presents the research with the help of which we were finding out the understanding of the selected terms from the plane geometry with a chosen sample of fifth graders. We were interested to know to what extent fifth graders know the terms and symbols of the selected geometric topics, and to what extent they achieve the described level at these terms according to van Hiele’s degrees of geometry understanding.
