In this thesis, we present phraseology and its denomination of basic units, as well as the properties of idioms. We examine a textbook for teaching Slovene as a second/foreign language for an intermediate level. We attempt to find overlaps, or a lack thereof, of chosen idioms in the Slovene, Croatian, Serbian and Macedonian languages and, finally, through a survey of foreign students, we analyse their recognition and understanding of Slovene idioms in their lexical form and within context.
