The thesis aims at describing and analyzing the rural areas of Smokuč and Rodine, the villages in the municipality of Žirovnica, and it suggests the draft of the possible development and spatial planning of the area that is based on the results of the detailed analysis. The first part of the thesis focuses on the historical development of the area. The demographic composition of the population and the settlement structure are addressed as well. What follows is the analysis of the characteristics of the infrastructure and the available sales and servicing activities. The actual use of the area and some of its restrictions as well as the characteristics of the municipal spatial plan are discussed, too. The analyses are graphically presented. The second part of the thesis provides some suggestions related to the possible development and spatial planning of the analysed areas – the suggested solutions are graphically presented, too. The presented suggestions are associated with the expansion of residential areas where the available areas of the settlements are as well as to the planning and maintenance of the regional road in the area. The upgrading of the road might improve road safety in the settlements’ centre.
