Slovenia is characterized by great geographic, climatic, orographic, geological and ecological diversity. We expect that it will be necessary to construct more than one reference continuous tree-ring series of silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies Karst.) to be used for dating. The Dinaric region was selected to construct the first regional reference chronologies. Investigations were made in four silver fir and three spruce forest stands with 115 trees. Disks or cores were taken to measure tree ring widths. The data were processed using standard methods. The equipment used was a LINTAB measuring device combined with a TSAPX programme and our own programme, UTIL. Seven local chronologies, four of the silver fir and three of the naturally grown spruce were constructed. The lengths of silver fir chronologies were; Bistra - 234 years, Ravnik - 142 years, Javornik- 142 years, and Goteniski Sneznik 150 years. The lengths of Norway spruce chronologies were; 271 years in Borovec, 230 years in Goteniski Sneznik, and 235 years in Draga. The "Gleichlaufigkeit" coefficients obtained by comparison of fir chronologies were 68.5% for Bistra and Ravnik, and 70.4% for Javornik and Goteniski Sneznik. The "Gleichlaufigkeit" coefficients for spruce chronologies were 61.6 - 65.6%. The high value of "Gleichlaufigkeit" was in all cases confirmed by a significant t-value. The results indicate that it will be necessary to construct at least two reference chronologies for silver fir from the Dinaric region in Slovenia. Altitude might play an important role when dividing the region into dendrochronologically different areas. The high coincidence between three spruce chronologies was expected due to the great similarity of investigated forest sites. The comparison of the presented silver fir chronologies with the European ones (Becker & Giertz-Siebenlist 1971; Eckstein & Sass 1988; Peringo et al. 1986) showed a statistically significant similarity. The presented Norway spruce chronologies were not similar to the North Italian ones (Peringo et al. 1986). Additionally wood of living trees and archaeological wood should be collected to confirm and extend the presented chronologies. Furthermore, we should aim towards dividing Slovenia in different dendrochronological regions. For this, systematic team work should continue.

Silver fir and spruce tree-ring chronologies in Slovenia
