Development and notions in our lives have become a constant in all fields. Therefore, the domain of optical networks is no exception, which, in my twenty-two years of study in this area, can be strongly observed.
Better quality materials, equipment and instruments are utilised for construction of the network. As a contractor, I rarely checked standards, as I always complied with the project design and tender documentation. Only these have the requirements for the selection of materials with the described characteristics, manufactured in accordance with the latest standards, while at the same time, referring to regulations aged 25 years or more.
The same applies to verifying the quality of the constructed network, where the checking procedures have become routine.
The question of the precise content of the regulations "Instructions on the measurement of optical cables in telecommunication lines", PTT Gazette 12/91, remains still unanswered.
In this thesis, I have given a substantive review of the regulations and standards of measurement of optical fibre, in two parts. The first section examines the regulations that design engineers and clients refer to in design and tender support. The second section comprises a follow-up of the valid standards and description of the measurements of fibre optics, which are consistent with the regulations.
I have kept in mind that quality control is performed using measuring instruments that contractors and operators have in their own possession.
