In human diet cereals represent an important source of carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, and elements, which are needed for healthy growth and development. This thesis is thus focused on knowledge of cereals among primary school students.
We were assessing the knowledge of different cereals among primary school students based on their age and type of environment they live in. Beside these two variables, we took into consideration also their gender. 240 primary school students from sixth and ninth grade were included in this research. The data was acquired by questionnaire.
The results of the empirical part are showing that the students are less familiar with sorghum, amaranth, and quinoa, which were among listed cereals. Wheat, rice, maize, buckwheat, barley, oat, spelt, rye, and white millet are well known among students and also very often in their diet. They are familiar with the nutritional composition of cereals and are aware that cereals play an important role in our daily diet. Primary school students from urban area are more inclined to try different kinds of cereals then the ones from rural area.
It is important for students to consume healthy food at home as in school more often, which includes cereals and its products. For proper incorporation of cereals and its products in our diet we need to know their composition and quality, that is why it is important for students to acquire the proper knowledge, which can help them to plan their diet accordingly.
