Every sector of industry creates not only final products but waste as a by-product as well. This is also true for leather industry, which is considered one of major environment polluters. The waste management situation has improved immensely in recent times as less and less waste gets disposed of to waste landfills. With the use of the best technology available it is possible to materially utilize waste and the disposal of waste becomes the last alternative. The subject of the thesis is organization and management of the existent leather industry waste landfill Rakovnik. The waste landfill was created in times when the waste problem was not that well recognized and environment preservation demands were exactly high. The first part of the thesis presents definitions and types of waste. It also offers technological solutions concerning waste management. Furthermore, it presents legal procedures and current regulations concerning waste for Slovenia as well as the European Union. The second part contains the analysis of the current condition of the waste landfill Rakovnik, which shows the waste landfill’s negative influence on the environment and the quantity of the disposed waste. Various
solutions are offered on how to organize and tidy the waste landfill at the existent location. Some technological procedures are presented regarding the cleaning of wastewater and ground water, as well as the results of the practical work. Two of the possible solutions offered are the transposition of waste to a new location, and the transport of waste to waste processing or demolition.
