The primary objective in developing DIAtlas was to meet the needs of the Department of Dialectology at the Fran Ramovš Institute of the Slovenian Language, which arose from its ongoing geolinguistic work on the Slovenian Linguistic Atlas (SLA). As the project progressed, however, DIAtlas was enlarged to support other dialectological research. It now incorporates various atlases, a dictionary, and a collection of publications. DIAtlas consists of a database and a web-based user interface, and it is integrated with QGIS for map creation. It uses a PostgreSQL/PostGIS database to store dialect data, spatial data, metadata, source materials (e.g., scans of notebooks containing older dialect records, images, audio recordings, etc.), generated maps, and additional geographical layers. The graphical user interface (GUI) is a stateless web application built with Django and Python.
