The last and probably best literary work by Ivan Tavčar (1850–1939), one of the main representatives of Slovenian realism of the nineteenth century, is the novel Visoška kronika (The Visoko Chronicle, 1919), which is interesting to observe, among other things, from the perspective of the theme of water, which acquires figurative meanings. In this article, the theme of water serves as a common thread for analyzing the fates of individuals because it has metaphorical meanings. This reveals Tavčar’s masterpiece, which has withstood the inexorable flow of time, in a different, new light.
