This bachelor's thesis examines media reporting on transgender identity and transgender people in Slovenia. Through a qualitative content analysis of a sample of 22 articles from four Slovenian online media outlets – MMC RTV SLO, Nova24TV, Demokracija and Domovina – published in 2025, I found that most articles addressing transgender issues focus on changes to legislation or on the different implementation of laws, resulting in three quarters of the articles being framed within a political discourse. As these topics are accompanied by political debates, politicians are the most frequently represented actors and, at the same time, the sources on which journalists base their reporting. Transgender people were most frequently represented as
citizens whose rights are violated, making this representation closely connected to their representation as victims of discrimination. In the analysed articles, they were also represented as a danger or a threat, particularly in the field of women's sports, and as activists of transgender ideology who threaten children's safety and citizen's rights. The representations of transgender people as adolescents and as patients are also interconnected, as they occur together in articles reporting on gender-affirming healthcare. All but one of the analysed articles share the characteristic that they do not include the voices of transgender people themselves; instead, their gender identity and views are discussed by people who often have no direct experience of being transgender.
