A sustainable society meets its needs in a way that does not compromise the opportunities of future generations. Limiting negative environmental impacts and conserving natural resources are essential for achieving a sustainable society. Concrete is the second most widely used material in the world, and its production accounts for 5 % to 8 % of all anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Cement production—one of the three key ingredients of concrete—contributes 90 % of these emissions. Given the significant environmental impact of concrete production, the use of modern concretes is crucial for achieving a sustainable society. Through self-healing capabilities, alternative binders, and reduced consumption of natural resources, these concretes contribute to lowering emissions and preserving the environment.
