The thesis analyses the translations of France Prešeren’s poetry into Czech. The focus is on the versological viewpoint of five poems and their translations. The purpose of the work is to establish which translation strategy was used by the Czech translators for transferring Prešeren’s poems into Czech based on phonetic properties of Czech and its versology tradition. The thesis compares which verse properties were preserved and which changes occurred in the translations as a result of adapting the text to the target language. Additionally, the thesis compares different Czech translations of the same poems, produced by different translators in different periods.
For a better review of the analysed material, an annotated bibliography of available translations of Prešeren’s poems into Czech is added to the first part of the theory. The following section outlines the fundamental principles of poetry translation, the Czech and Slovenian verse systems and rhymes, as well as their general phonetic characteristics. The empirical section analyses the verse structure of selected poems by various translators. The analysis presents how individual authors in different periods solved the translation challenges posed by Prešeren’s poetry.
