Digression in the Form of Female Experience in the Novels The Knife and the Apple and Dark Love.
In my diploma thesis paper, I discuss digression in the modernist novel A Knife and an Apple (1980) by Ivanka Hergold and in a modern novel Dark Love (Temna laska, 2000) by Alexandra Berková, and analyze its impact on the portrayal of female experience. In terms of content, the novels under consideration depict the position of women in modern and contemporary times, and due to their social relevance, they remain relevant even today. The first part of this thesis provides a detailed presentation of the concepts of genre syncretism and digression. Then, I present three types of digressions in more detail: lyrization, essayization, and scenario, and examine the beginning of the introduction of digression into Slovenian literature based on the poetics of Ivan Cankar, specifically his novel Mrs. Judit. In the second part, I use an analytical-interpretive method to explore digression in the novel A Knife and an Apple, and using a comparative method, I explore the role of digression in the portrayal of the female experience in the novel Dark Love. In the conclusion, I discuss digression in both novels influences the shaping of the image of the female experience.
