Appropriate planning, design, and maintenance of culverts are essential for ensuring the
stability of forest roads and reducing the impact of damage mechanisms. This thesis analysed culvert damage and the factors influencing its occurrence and evaluated the performance of two selected culverts in the Municipality of Trzin using hydrological and hydraulic modelling. The first part of the study involved a field survey of 18 damaged culverts in the Municipality of Črna na Koroškem. The most frequently observed damage mechanisms were mechanical damage, corrosion, and abrasion, while smaller culverts were more susceptible to blockage. Design discharges with a 100-year return period were calculated using the HEC-HMS model and the empirical methods of Kresnik and VGIPintar. Hydraulic calculations showed that several culverts required larger diameters than those currently installed. The second part of the study included hydrological modelling with HEC-HMS and 2D hydraulic modelling with HEC-RAS for two culverts in Trzin.
The results showed that culvert performance depends not only on culvert dimensions but also on upstream and downstream conditions, flow approach direction, and inlet and outlet protection measures. Priority measures include channel maintenance, improving flow approach, diverting part of the flow upstream of the culvert, and reinforcing inlet embankments.
