The master's thesis focused on developing a didactic game for teaching poetry translation. The research aimed to design a game that would encourage translation students towards collaborative and creative learning while preseting poetry translation as a process with multiple correct solutions. The research connected different fields like poetry translation, didactic games and graphic design.
The theoretical part outlined the characteristics of poetic language, the specific features and challenges of poetry translation, and the importance of interpretation in understanding and translating poetic texts. It discussed approaches to learning through play, gamification, and the use of didactic games in education. Particular attention was given to the design of didactic games, cards as carriers of information, visual hierarchy, typography, illustration, and packaging.
The experimental part began with an analysis of didactic games for language learning and translation on the Slovenian and international markets. Based on this analysis, the development of the concept for the didactic game Babylon was described. The game was designed as a card game in which players solve translation challenges and search for appropriate solutions by combining different categories of cards. The content of the game was based on the poetry of Srečko Kosovel.
This was followed by descriptions of the game design, which took into account the principles of visual hierarchy of information, typography, color, and contrast. Vector illustrations were produced and packaging was designed; in addition to its protective function, the packaging forms, an important part of the visual identity and user experience. A prototype of the game was produced and tested with translation students from the Faculty of Arts at the University of Ljubljana.
Finally, a survey was presented, showing that the game encouraged student collaboration, active discussion, and creative thinking in translation tasks. The research results showed that a didactic game can represent effective support in teaching of poetry translation.
