The diploma thesis examined the possibility of adapting the artwork Studio (slo. Atelje) by the academic painter Gabrijel Stupica into forms more accessible to children and to blind and partially sighted users. The thesis aimed to investigate how a complex visual artwork could be transformed into didactic, interactive, and tactile products while maintaining a connection to the original artistic motif.
The theoretical part presented the characteristics of Stupica’s artistic practice, the artwork Atelje, the importance of bringing art closer to different user groups, and the basic principles of graphic preparation for tactile reproduction. The experimental part was based on the production of several prototypes derived from the same artwork. A small and a large jigsaw puzzle, an insert puzzle, and two tactile depictions of a face, an original and a simplified version, were produced. The materials used included acrylic glass, cardboard, foamed polyvinyl chloride, solid cardboard and white polylactic acid filament. The working procedures included image processing, vector drawing, laser cutting, inkjet printing with ultraviolet inks, three-dimensional modelling and three-dimensional printing.
The results showed that, when adapting an artwork, it is important to establish a balance between preserving the original motif and ensuring the usability of the final product. In the case of jigsaw puzzles, precise cutting and varied puzzle-piece shapes proved essential. For the insert puzzle, additional manual finishing of the edges was important, whereas for the tactile faces, the simplified version proved more understandable for tactile perception.
It was found that, with an appropriate combination of graphic preparation, materials and modern technologies, an artwork could be brought closer to users who do not experience it only visually. The produced prototypes demonstrated the possibility of integrating art, design, and an inclusive approach to create a more accessible user experience.
