Dependence on a single IT provider can pose operational, financial and
strategic risks for an organization. One option for reducing such dependence
is the migration of key services to open source solutions, taking into account
several factors, such as the complexity of the migration, interoperability with
the existing environment, long-term support and risks associated with the
transition.
In the framework of the diploma thesis, we will discuss the above factors
and verify them on a practical example of migrating the Microsoft Active
Directory directory service to the Samba 4 Active Directory Domain Controller.
For this purpose, a test environment was established with Microsoft and
Samba domain controllers, in which the gradual integration of the Samba
domain controller into the existing domain was carried out. The operation of
key domain functionalities was verified, including directory replication, user
accounts, authentication, DNS and group policies.
The results show that Samba 4 enables a high level of compatibility with
the Microsoft Active Directory environment and a gradual migration without
direct interruption of domain operation. Limitations were identified, especially
in the area of replication of shared system domain files and integration with
some Microsoft services, which can significantly affect the complexity of a
complete transition. The practical example thus shows that when migrating to
open source solutions, it is not only functional comparability that is important,
but also managing dependencies, interoperability and risks throughout the
entire migration process.
