In this bachelor’s thesis, we designed a softcover children’s reading journal to help children develop and maintain their reading habits. In the theoretical section, we defined the concepts of reading, reading literacy, and reading culture, and presented the children’s reading journal and its benefits. We also described the key stages in the production of a printed journal: idea visualisation, selection of colours, typeface, paper, and format, preparation of the print file, printing, and final graphic finishing, with a more detailed explanation of binding the book block to the cover. In the experimental section, based on a review of professional literature in the theoretical part and an analysis of the Slovenian and international markets, we developed a children’s reading journal. The creation of the journal began with the conceptual design, which defined its content and layout. A well-developed concept significantly facilitated the subsequent design process, which was mainly carried out using the desktop publishing software Adobe InDesign. After completing the design, the prepared print file was printed on a digital printing machine using the electrophotographic process. The book block and cover were then trimmed using a cutting machine, while the cover was additionally creased with a creasing machine. In the final step, the book block and cover were bound together, resulting in the final product, the children’s reading journal “My Reading Journal”. The journal contains 86 pages and is designed to encourage children’s reading habits through various content sections, such as recording favourite books, reading goals, a list of books for future reading, evaluation of read books, and reading challenges. During the development of the children’s reading journal, we found that the process consists of several key stages which together ensure the quality of the final product.
