Postmodernism was closely linked to the emergence of postindustrial society, development of
technology, advertisement and consumerism. Postmodernism in art began to reject the principles of modernism. It prioritized the blurring of boundaries between high and popular culture, operating through the means of media and advertising. The art of the 1980s was dominated by pluralism, meaning that no single "correct" style was established, instead, artists utilized a wide range of styles, approaches, media, techniques, and materials. Among the representatives of postmodern painting is the American artist David Salle. His work is characterized by pastiche and the eclectic combination of unrelated images executed in various styles. His visual vocabulary encompasses black-and-white nudes based on photographs, imagery from advertising, pop culture, cartoons, and the appropriation of historical works.
