The diploma thesis examines attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in the kindergarten, with a focus on the experiences and beliefs of early childhood education students, that is future preschool professionals. ADHD is a disorder, for which is characteristic lack of concentration, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Preschool teachers or educational professionals spend a lot of time with children, so they quickly recognize symptoms of ADHD.
The purpose of thesis research is to find out, what kind of experience and beliefs have preschool education students about ADHD in the kindergarten. The study included responses from 100 early childhood education students at the University of Ljubljana who participated in the survey. The research is based on a quantitative approach. In the diploma thesis I used an online questionnaire 1KA. In research I also tried to find out, what kind of opinions the students have about ADHD depending on their age, additional education, practical training and work experience.
The results show that the students gain experience with ADHD in kindergarten, during practical education and furthermore in during their job. The experience about ADHD The experience with ADHD outside of work were rare. I also found out, that the students have main character of educational professional in early treatment for children with ADHD. Furthermore, the research also shows that students make some mistakes, such as a high rate of punishment and warnings for bad behavior, which could be effective with children with ADHD. There were also a lot of beliefs, that the children with ADHD don’t have a lot of motivation and that they are spoiled.
I also found out, that the beliefs of students are independent of their age, education and expirience. And I also found out, that the most of the students don't completely understand what the abbreviation ADHD stands for.
