Packaging has a major impact when choosing products, most notably among children. Design and marketing decisions often exploit children's attention to visually appealing elements, regardless of the packaging's content. The purpose of the thesis was to investigate in the theoretical part how packaging influences children's perception and choice of products, which packaging features attract children, and then, through the experimental part, to find a way to design packaging for their benefit, encourage healthy choices and greater independence in play. We also investigated the positive impact of play and creativity during early childhood, as it is directly related to the concept of multifunctional packaging that we wanted to design.
The goal of the thesis was to design packaging that is designed in its form and structure in such a way that, once it has served its original purpose of protecting the product, it can be transformed and reused in a creative way. In the process of manufacturing the multifunctional packaging, we used corrugated cardboard with a grammage of 336 g/m2 and a thickness of 1,6 mm, to which we added elements using digital UV ink-jet printing that, in addition to the primary function of protection, adds other functions to the box that have the potential to extend its lifespan. Since children in the target group differ in their level of development and skills, we included several different activity options of varying difficulty on the packaging, the most challenging of which is cutting the cardboard and assembling the box into a new shape, while the easier one is colouring the colouring book and finding hidden elements – the gecko animal. The easiest way is to play with additional elements when the packaging has already been processed. Despite the varying levels of difficulty, the product is suitable for all ages with the help of parents or other grown-ups.
Based on the hypothesis, we found that the production of multi-functional cardboard packaging that is child-friendly in terms of appearance, use and material is possible with proper planning.
