The purpose of our diploma thesis is to create a space for the visual interpretation of a stranger’s personality through the combination of portrait photography and handwritten text, and to present this concept in the form of a photobook. The project does not seek to provide an objective or diagnostic analysis of individuals, but rather to encourage reflection on how quickly and intuitively we form judgments about others based on their appearance, and how handwriting, in the context of digital communication, can regain its significance as an intimate visual clue.
Within the methodological framework, we defined the perception of individuals and the interpretation of their personality traits based on visual information. Additionally, the field of graphology is introduced, including its historical background and its role in interpreting personality traits through handwriting. As the final outcome of the project takes the form of a photobook, the theoretical part also includes an overview of portrait photography and photobook theory.
The experimental part encompasses the description of the approach to collecting material and the process of creating the photobook, as well as the interpretative analysis of the collected handwriting samples. The results present the key decisions made during the development of the photobook and the final outcome, while the discussion includes an evaluation of the final product, the working process, and the overall success of the thesis.
