The thesis presents a comparison between the SIST EN 1997-1:2005 standard and the second generation of Eurocode 7 in the field of geotechnical design of slopes, cuttings and embankments. The comparison covers the fundamentals of geotechnical design, geotechnical categories, ground properties, groundwater, geotechnical analyses, ultimate and serviceability limit states, as well as requirements for execution, testing and reporting. Particular attention is given to changes in the determination of geotechnical categories, representative values of ground properties, and the methods used to verify global stability. It was found that the new generation of Eurocode 7 does not introduce most of the fundamental principles as entirely new concepts, but rather defines them in greater detail, classifies them more systematically and links them more closely. The new Eurocode also addresses the zone of influence, structural robustness, ground improvement, and the effects of groundwater on the stability and serviceability of slopes, cuttings and embankments in greater detail. Significant changes also concern the verification of limit states through the use of verification cases and the material (MFA) and resistance factor (RFA) approaches, which enable a more systematic treatment of actions, ground properties and geotechnical resistance.
