This thesis examines the impact of the introduction of patriarchy through colonization on North American Indigenous communities, as illustrated by Paula Gunn Allen’s short story “Deer Woman”. Following a brief overview of the author, the myth of the Deer Woman and the analysis turns to the process of colonization and its effects on both Indigenous women and men, using the example of Paula Gunn Allen’s “Deer Woman”. The thesis concludes by exploring the connection between Indigenous people and their traditions today.
