This thesis deals with the design of nominally pinned joints in steel structures according to the new EN 1993-1-8 standard, which will come into use at the end of September 2027. The main objective of the thesis is to present the innovations introduced by the second generation of Eurocode 3 in the field of nominally pinned joint design and to demonstrate their application in the dimensioning and verification of joints. The theoretical part presents the basic characteristics of steel joints and their classification according to stiffness and resistance. Particular attention is given to nominally pinned joints, the requirements for their rotational capacity and ductility, and the new provisions introduced by EN 1993-1-8:2024. The practical part includes calculation examples of three typical types of nominally pinned joints: a double angle web cleats connection, a fin plate connection, and a partial depth end plate connection. For each example, the requirements for ductility and rotational capacity are verified, and the resistance of the joint is determined through design calculations. The results show that the new provisions enable a more systematic and reliable design approach and provide a better representation of the actual behaviour of joints. The thesis confirms that the new standard represents an important step towards more reliable design of steel structures.
