The example of the parish of Gorje illustrates the intertwining efforts of secular and ecclesiastical authorities to reform and stabilize Catholic religious life during the 17th century. It was marked by problems with the administration of the sacraments, marital infidelity, the clergy engaging in activities inappropriate to their profession, and the role of the feudal lords in church affairs. Parallel to the internal religious reform, churches and their furnishings and artistic creations were renovated in the Mannerist and early Baroque styles. The activities of the parish were linked to the management of church property within the feudal system. The informations were collected by visitors (the princbishops of Ljubljana) through interviews with parish priests, vicars, sacristans, church-wardens, neighbors, and individuals involved in the affairs.
