This master’s thesis explores the effects of the Enso method in comparison with the
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program on burnout, depression, anxiety,
self and group connectedness among adults with anxiety-depressive symptomatology.
The Enso method represents a structured group-based approach that combines listening
to one’s own heartbeat through a digital stethoscope, therapeutically designed supportive
texts and group reflection. The study was conducted as a 12-week comparative
intervention involving an experimental group practicing the Enso method and a control
group practicing MBSR techniques. The sample included 20 adult participants divided
into two groups of ten. The quantitative part of the study included the Copenhagen
Burnout Inventory (CBI), PHQ-9, and GAD-7 questionnaires, together with ongoing self
assessments of self-connection and group connectedness. The results showed a
statistically significant reduction in burnout in both groups, a statistically significant
reduction in depressive symptoms in the experimental group, and a statistically significant
reduction in anxiety symptoms in the control group. Differences between the groups were
not statistically significant; however, average improvements were greater in the
experimental group, particularly in relation to self-connection and group connectedness.
The qualitative part of the study was based on participants’ reflective writings and the
researcher’s field notes, which were analyzed using thematic analysis. Both interventions
supported bodily calming, emotional regulation, self-reflection, and the development of
group cohesion. The process in the Enso group was more strongly connected with the
experience of the heartbeat, the relationship toward oneself, and bodily awareness,
whereas the MBSR process was more associated with observing thoughts and sensations,
releasing tension, and returning attention to the present moment. A deeper understanding
of the effects of the method would require future research with larger samples,
longitudinal follow-up, and the inclusion of physiological indicators of autonomic
regulation.
