This thesis examines how social media platforms influence the spread of cyberattacks
and analyses how well Slovenian users of these platforms are familiar with cyber threats.
The aim of the study was to identify which threats are most common on social media, how
they spread, and whether awareness of these threats affects how individuals respond to
an attack. The theoretical part describes the most common forms of attacks, the legal
framework for cybersecurity in Slovenia, examples of attacks both domestically and
abroad, and awareness-raising strategies.
The empirical part is based on a survey of 122 Slovenian users, analysed using
descriptive statistics and linear regression analysis. The findings show that respondents
are more familiar with threats that receive greater media coverage, such as phishing and
identity theft, while being less aware of technically more complex threats. The results
indicate that respondents who regularly follow security alerts and attend cybersecurity
training believe they would more easily recognise threats. The key finding is that education
alone is not sufficient for safe online behaviour and must be complemented by continuous
information sharing, accessible security tools, clear guidelines for action, and regular
awareness campaigns that reach all generations.
The thesis contributes to understanding where Slovenian users have the greatest gaps in
their knowledge of cyber threats and provides a foundation for designing more effective
and targeted awareness campaigns.
