Social media have increasingly become a common tool for spending leisure time and are therefore an almost indispensable part of the daily lives of most people. As such, they provide an ideal environment for social comparison and can significantly influence users’ perceptions of their lives and interpersonal relationships, including their romantic relationships. For most individuals, a romantic relationship represents one of the most important bonds they can establish with another person. Therefore, in this master's thesis, we aimed to examine in greater detail whether relationship satisfaction is associated with the use of modern social media and social comparison with other relationships. More specifically, we investigated the relationship between romantic relationship social comparison, relationship satisfaction, and time spent on social media. We were also interested in whether differences in social comparison and relationship satisfaction exist with regard to gender and relationship duration.
In the theoretical part, we explored and defined romantic relationships, the process of social comparison, and social media, as well as their effects on the psychological and relational well-being of users. The empirical part presents a study conducted using three questionnaires: the Social Networking Time Use Scale (SONTUS), the Relationship Social Comparison Measure (RSCM), and the Couple Satisfaction Index (CSI). The study included 184 participants, 148 women and 36 men, aged between 18 and 69 years.
The results revealed a negative association between romantic relationship social comparison and relationship satisfaction. We also found that social media use during stressful periods was negatively associated with relationship satisfaction and positively associated with romantic relationship social comparison. The study did not reveal any statistically significant association between overall social media use and relationship satisfaction or relationship social comparison. Likewise, no significant differences were found in relationship social comparison or relationship satisfaction with respect to gender or relationship duration.
This master's thesis sheds light on and makes an important contribution to understanding the relationships among social media use, romantic relationship comparison, and relationship satisfaction. It also opens opportunities for further research in this field.
