Master's thesis examines the applicability of Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) principles, or so-called “development around public transit nodes,” for spatial and transportation planning in the Savinja region. The aim of the thesis was to develop an analytical model that enables the evaluation of the development potential of areas near public transit nodes and serves as a decision-making tool at the regional, strategic, and local levels.
The research is based on a review of domestic and international literature and an analysis of other key calculation models. On this basis, a modified calculation model was developed that incorporates components of various values (slow traffic, public transport, road traffic, central point, mixed use, and spatial intensity). Guidelines and measures were formulated that are incorporated into the model based on the calculated value of each individual node.
The model was specifically applied to the Celje – Velenje railway corridor, where individual nodes were analyzed, and their development potentials were determined based on the results. For the selected Celje Lava node, an urban design concept was further developed as an example of the practical implementation of TOD principles. The study demonstrates that a data-driven analytical model, based on the principles of transit-oriented development, can effectively integrate transportation and spatial planning and serves as a useful tool for guiding the sustainable development of Slovenian regions.
