Due to the fast pace of life, the changes, and the progress in today’s time, the needs in space are also changing. Many plots in Slovenia are not only of historical importance but also represent an important part of our cultural and architectural heritage. They are agricultural plots but more and more of them are abandoned or overgrown. The problem of the abandonment of agriculture in Slovenia is most felt in rural areas, such as the Upper Savinja Valley, where empty, derelict farm buildings remind us that we are slowly losing our identity and architectural heritage in the countryside. The thesis deals with the problem of an abandoned farm located in an idyllic location in the municipality of Luče. The Perne higheraltitude farm is a well-preserved farm with a typical architectural design, characteristic of the settlement and the municipality. Since there was no successor to continue the activity, this farm lost its purpose and function. The farm remains unused to this day, and the buildings are slowly becoming derelict.
The thesis recognizes the farm as a location that, with appropriate arrangements and a program, could contribute to the preservation of the cultural heritage of the settlement and the municipality. By acknowledging the historical function of the area, I try to preserve the former program in the location with an educational addition that would be significant for the community and the surrounding area. As a result of social and industrial development, agriculture in the Upper Savinja Valley was impacted the most. As a result, the position of the farmer has worsened, which mostly causes abandonment of agriculture and migration to urban areas. Those who persist in agriculture pursue – in addition to agriculture – additional complementary activities that are their main source of income – tourism, sole entrepreneurship, carpentry, wood cutting, etc. I take the same approach to software design. The thesis envisages the comprehensive arrangement of the area and the formation of a farming center which would be complemented by an educational program for young people in cooperation with schools.
The interventions relate both to existing facilities that require renovations and room adaptations for their new program, as well as to newly positioned facilities that modernize and complement the farmstead and are connected to it. While designing all interventions, I focus on the original architectural features and the former function of the area. Since this homestead had a great influence on the settlement and the municipality in history, I wish to revive it again with a new program that is connected to the former one.
