The master's thesis focuses on nature-based recreation in the Pohorje Regional Park and its
surrounding area. The study aimed to assess the Recreation Opportunity Spectrum and the
economic value of this ecosystem service in the area, to inform management decisions.
Spatial analyses were conducted using a modified ESTIMAP model, while the economic
aspect was evaluated using the contingent valuation method. The spatial modelling results
indicate higher recreational attractiveness within the park than in the surrounding area, as well
as a higher proportion of areas with restrictions or prohibited access. Additionally, areas with
the highest attractiveness increase in proportion to higher levels of protection. Accessibility
and recreational opportunities are greatest at the main entry points. The mean willingness to
pay for a one-day entrance fee was found to be €8.27, while the median and mode were found
to be €5, with a right-skewed distribution. The results suggest potential conflicts between
nature conservation objectives and recreational land use, highlighting the need for visitor
management and regulation as areas with higher recreational attractiveness frequently overlap
with areas under strict protection regimes. At the same time, contingent valuation shows that
visitors are willing to pay for the maintenance of recreational infrastructure, which confirms
the area’s perceived value for recreation and the need for its management.
