Introduction: Due to the numerous potential motor impairments in individuals with Alzheimer’s dementia, it is important not only to monitor cognitive function but also to regularly and accurately assess motor abilities. The aim of this study is to examine the relationships between various outcome measures for evaluating motor abilities and the degree of cognitive decline in individuals with Alzheimer’s dementia. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted, including 497 patients with Alzheimer’s dementia. Physical funcitons were assessed using a battery of six tests: the De Morton Mobility Index (DEMMI), the 6-minute walk test (6 MWT), the 10-meter walk test (10 MWT), handgrip strength, the 30-second chair stand test (STS), and the Timed Up and Go test (TUG). Cognitive abilities were evaluated using the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE). Results: Statistically significant low positive correlations with MMSE (while including age as a covariate) were found for DEMMI (p<0.001), STS (p>0.001), handgrip strength (p=0.031), and 6 MWT (p=0.006), while 10 MWT (p=0.001) and TUG (p<0.001). Conversely, 10 MWT (p = 0,001) and TUG (p<0,001) showed statistically significant negative correlations with MMSE. Conclusion: The study confirms that cognitive decline is associated with motor abilities, emphasizing the importance of physical activity for patients with Alzheimer’s dementia.
