The thesis discusses the field of waste management, which represents one of the key environmental challenges of modern society. The focus is primarily on understanding waste, its generation, different types of waste, and the impacts they have on the environment.
Waste management is presented in a way that first introduces the waste management hierarchy, followed by activities related to waste management. Basic concepts, waste classification, and methods of collection and treatment are described, where proper separation at the point of origin plays an important role. The thesis also addresses legislation in this field, presenting its foundations, key legal acts, and their development, with emphasis on three main ones. Data on the quantities of municipal and total waste in Slovenia are also included, indicating a longterm increase in waste generation,as well as an improvement in separate waste collection.
The thesis further examines waste management in the Municipality of Koper, specifically within the operational area of the company Marjetica Koper, which operates in the Municipality of Koper and the Municipality of Ankaran. The company and its history, and the waste management system in the area are described. The vehicle fleet, its composition and operation, as well as specific aspects of waste collection, such as adaptation to seasonal changes and variations in waste quantities, are also presented.
The Municipality of Koper and the Municipality of Ankaran represent one of the main tourist destinations for both domestic and foreign visitors, which makes waste management in this area even more important. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that waste management is a complex process that plays an important role in the future of society and the environment.
